UMBC students, faculty, and staff: Join local leaders addressing structural racism for a virtual dinner conversation about their aspirations and challenges, and learn how you can get involved. You will have the opportunity to hear from several change makers and spend time in small groups interacting with them and other participants.

Among the panelists will be: Michael Casiano, Assistant Professor, American Studies, UMBC; Julianna B. Felkoski, '16, Juris Doctor candidate, University of Baltimore School of Law; Eric Ford, Director, Choice Program; Bill Joyner, '11, Equity Officer, Baltimore Police Department; Brandon Scott, candidate for Mayor and President, Baltimore City Council; Mary Washington, Maryland State Senator

Space is limited and RSVP is required: tinyurl.com/changemakersdinner. Because we cannot meet in person, this is a bring-your-own dinner event.

[Free]dom Friday: Dismantling Columbus

Friday, July 31st, 2020 | 3:00-4:30 p.m. | Online: Webex Link

[Free]dom Fridays are designed to provide a virtual space to have an open dialogue about social justice and identity-based topics with other participants. The recent removal of Christopher Columbus statues across the nation has made some people question “Why are people mad at Columbus?” and “Why should I care?” This Freedom Friday will focus on these removals in connection with the recent uprisings to further racial justice in the United States. Join us as we explore the history of American colonialism, connection to late 19th/early 20th century Italian immigration, the romanticization of Columbus, the erasure and genocide of Indigenous peoples across the Americas, and how it contributes to upholding White supremacy.

All are welcome to attend! If you have any questions or have suggestions for a future [Re]fresh Friday or [Free]dom Friday, please email Heidy George, Program Associate for Student Diversity and Inclusion at hmg@umbc.edu or at mosaic@umbc.edu.

Join us: WebEx Link. Click "going" if you are planning to attend.
